Proverbs 31:25
For years, Proverbs 31 made me tired before I'd finished reading it.
The woman described there seemed to do everything. She rose before dawn. She managed a household. She ran a business. She cared for the poor. She was strong, wise, industrious, and apparently never overwhelmed.
I read it as a standard. A benchmark. A list of qualities I was perpetually failing to embody.
It took me a long time to read it differently.
What changed was not the text. What changed was the question I brought to it.
I stopped asking: how do I become this woman? And I started asking: what is this passage actually showing me?
What I found was not a checklist. It was a portrait. A portrait of a woman whose life was marked not by performance, but by character. By the quiet, consistent choices she made over time. By the way she treated people. By the values that shaped her decisions.
She was not performing for an audience. She was living from the inside out.
The verse that stopped me was verse 25. She is clothed with strength and dignity; she can laugh at the days to come.
That laughter is not the laughter of someone who has everything under control. It is the laughter of someone who has learned to trust. Someone who has found a foundation that does not shift with circumstances.
I think that is what the passage is really about. Not productivity. Not perfection. But the kind of deep-rooted security that comes from knowing who you are and whose you are.
That is something worth aspiring to.
